PURCHASE, New York (December, 2014) — Central National-Gottesman (CNG) is pleased to announce the renewal of their certificate from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for Chain-of-Custody and Controlled Wood Standards.
The FSC, a non-profit international organization, works to protect forests by setting standards for forests and companies. The FSC’s mission is to “promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests.”
The FSC Chain-of-Custody certification ensures FSC-certified material is identified or kept separate from non-certified material from the forest through the supply chain. Any company participating in the supply chain, from harvesters to retailers, is required to have the FSC Chain-of-Custody certification in order to label or promote their products as FSC certified.
The FSC Mix label was established in 2004 allowing manufacturers to mix non-certified materials with FSC-certified materials. To eliminate the use of non-certified wood coming from unacceptable sources in FSC-labeled products, the Controlled Wood standard was set into place.
Any company making Controlled Wood claims must complete a risk assessment to identify the risk of their non-certified wood coming from unacceptable sources, such as illegally harvested wood, wood harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights and wood from genetically modified trees. Sources classified as low risk are considered Controlled Wood and are allowed to be mixed with FSC-certified materials.
