We are pleased to report that Central National-Gottesman Inc. and our Lindenmeyr divisions recently completed a carbon footprint assessment and have committed to offsetting 100% of our corporate office emissions through the purchase of carbon offsets. This initiative to make our Purchase, NY office CarbonNeutral® further signifies our dedication to reducing our environmental impact.
We chose to retain The CarbonNeutral Company to conduct the emissions assessment and carbon offset services because of their track record of advising over 300 companies in 32 markets globally and their market-leading quality assurance processes, underpinned by The CarbonNeutral Protocol.
In the assessment it was determined that our Purchase, NY office generated 918 tons of direct CO2 emissions. Our emissions are broken down by “premises activities,” which include natural gas and electricity usage (390 tons of CO2), business travel (524 tons of CO2), and third-party deliveries (4 tons of CO2).
The Carbon Neutral Company has helped us offset 918 tons of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to:
• Taking 159 passenger vehicles off the road for a year
• CO2 emissions from 93,678 gallons of gasoline consumed
• CO2 emissions from 1,937 barrels of oil consumed
• CO2 emissions from burning 4.3 railcars of coal
Our CO2 offsets are generated by the McKinney Landfill Gas Project in McKinney, Texas. For this project, carbon finance is enabling the capture and combustion of landfill gas rather than allowing methane to escape into the atmosphere as waste decomposes at the site. Methane is 21 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas and in the United States municipal landfills are the second largest contributor of human-related methane emissions.
In addition to our carbon reduction initiative, we have taken significant steps toward reducing our environmental footprint by implementing recycling programs, investing in energy saving technology, and partnering with the right environmental organizations. We take great pride in these accomplishments and look forward to continuing our leadership position both from an environmental and business perspective.
